Frequently Asked Questions

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and what is the difference between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Japanese Ju Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ as it is also called was created by Grand Masters Carlos and Helio Gracie from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It focuses on ground fighting situations and self defense. Japanese Ju Jitsu comes from Japan, of course. Like many old and traditional martial arts, it is full of beautiful and artistic techniques. It does not have its emphasis on ground fighting, where the majority of fights end up.

What are the benefits of practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Apart from learning how to defend yourself effectively against any aggressor no matter the size, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an excellent activity as it builds and/or increases self confidence. When you train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you are exercising every muscle of your body including your brain.

Does Roleta Brazilian Jiu Jitsu work for women?

As for WOMEN, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is considered the best form of real self defense against a rape attack. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu works because of BODY MECHANICS not strength. During most attacks on women a victim will end up in a bottom position. But in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu this is considered a very favorable position to effectively attack and finish the aggressor from.

Do I need to be fit, young and very athletic to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

No you don’t. Because the key to correct (Roleta) Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Self Defense is to learn how to use BODY MECHANICS and leverage. You do not need strength or agility to execute a technique. There is a saying in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: If you are using strength to apply a technique that means you do not know that technique.

What is a general group lesson like? What is a general private lesson like? Do you offer seminars to other martial arts schools?

Usually in Roleta Brazilian Jiu Jitsu- private lessons are about 60 minutes per session. Group lessons are about 90 minutes.

During a group lesson, students will warm up for about 5 to 10 minutes, then they will learn and try out 3 to 4 techniques. Later they will spar for about 20 minutes focusing on applying what was taught during that lesson.

During a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu private lesson a student will warm up for about 5 minutes, if the student is new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, he will first be taught the basics and later progress into the Roleta Brazilian Jiu Jitsu self defense curriculum and then ground fighting/ sparring. If a student already knows some grappling, ground fighting or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, they will be spared 3 or 5 minutes right away to understand what they need to work on most to improve their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu game. If a student already has something in mind he wants to learn or work on, we will try to accommodate them. At the end of each lesson they will spar about 10 minutes with the student, stopping several times to show him or her openings to finishing techniques they may not have seen, and/or correct mistakes.

Do you offer seminars to other martial arts schools?

Yes, we are available for seminars in many countries. BJJ seminars are a good way for other martial schools to improve their ground fighting game. A seminar usually lasts 2 days, for a total of 8 hours. We will show different techniques depending on the group’s knowledge of ground fighting and grappling. A seminar can also be arranged to suit your needs. We are just a phone call away or email the relevant Roleta Brazilian jiu- jitsu academy for further details.

Why do you say that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a proven fighting system?

Decades of Mixed martial arts, no rules fighting events, and everything goes fighting competitions have proven it.

Why do I need to wear a Kimono/Gi/Uniform to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was created by Grand Masters Carlos and Helio Gracie as a scientific self defense system to work in real street fight situations not in sport a competition. In a realistic street fight attack your aggressor will wear some kind of clothing. Roleta Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to use your opponent clothing and turn it into a lethal weapon. To train these techniques hundreds of times we need to wear strong clothing that wont break/rip after a short period of training.
